Topeka ? The Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce are holding a fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Sam Brownback.

Brownback, currently a U.S. senator, faces Democratic state Sen. Tom Holland of Baldwin City in the November general election.

The casual attire, dinner event for Brownback will be held outdoors Thursday, Sept. 9 at Murfin Stables in Wichita.

To attend, guests will pay from $100 to $2,000 to the Brownback campaign.

Holland has been critical of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce.

In June, he told the Chamber that he would not seek nor accept the group’s endorsement.

During the 2010 legislative session, the Chamber lobbied against tax increases as legislators dealt with an unprecedented drop in revenue.

When a coalition of Democrats, including Holland, and moderate Republicans approved the temporary 1-cent increase in the state sales tax, Chamber President Kent Beisner said supporters of the “catered to the needs of those at the government trough.”

Holland said that was an insult to the elderly, school children and struggling Kansas families depending on state funding.

Holland was also on the winning side in passage of an $8.2 billion, 10-year transportation plan, which the Chamber opposed, but many businesses supported. That plan is supported with a portion of the state sales tax increase.
