25 years ago: Drake Bakery changes hands

It was the end of an institution and the beginning of a new one in Lawrence. Joe Drake, part-owner of Drake Bakery and Snack Shop since 1946, sold the business to Nghia Nguyen, who had been operating the Little Dragon food stand at Eighth and Massachusetts since April. Drake’s father, Carl, had started the bakery in 1927. Mrs. Nguyen said that she would retain the Drake name and the Drake menu of homecooked breakfasts and lunches. She also planned to add Oriental food at lunch and dinner times.

Five three-dimensional dinosaur models were being moved out of Kansas University’s Museum of Natural History after the closing of the “Dinosaur Days” exhibit. Museum staff members admitted having become most fond of the bronotosaurus; the entire public education staff had gathered in the panorama room to see him get switched off on the final night. The exhibit, which had opened on Oct. 5, had drawn nearly 43,000 people to the museum. The dinosaurs were to be sent by truck to the new Children’s Museum in Wichita.
