25 years ago: Late-night raid on Vermont Street could bring charges on gambling, liquor violations

From the Lawrence Journal-World on Oct. 20, 1985:

  • The Emergency Services Council of Lawrence, the city’s voluntary “agency of last resort” for the needy, reported that they had stopped taking applications for assistance two weeks earlier, when their funds had run dry. The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. (ECKAN) had had to turn away seven people the previous week. An average of 73 people were attending the free meals provided three days a week in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church as part of the new LINK project. These instances were presented as evidence that the poverty problem in Lawrence, although quiet and hidden from view, was a real factor in many lives.
  • A late-night raid at a building in the 600 block of Vermont was expected to result in arrests on charges of illegal gambling and liquor violations.
  • Incoming freshmen at Haskell Indian Junior College had scored higher than the previous year’s class on placement tests in math and English. Administrators and teachers were reported to be pleased about the results of the testing.
