40 years ago: City building inspector says few off-campus student residencies meeting code

City building inspector Ken Jorgensen, speaking about off-campus student housing in Lawrence, said that in the four years since the city had had some sort of minimum structures code, only 12 to 18 of an estimated 500 substandard living units had been rehabilitated and only one had been condemned and torn down for code violations.

Lawrence High School biology teacher Stan Roth, 35, was named the Kansas Conservation Educator of the Year by the Kansas Wildlife Federation. He was judged on his past achievements and activities related to conservation education. He was to receive the award at the federation’s annual convention. Gov. Robert Docking was scheduled to make the presentation.

Lawrence police were notified at about 3:00 a.m. of a car on fire on Wellington Road. A package of burnt matches was later found in the front seat, leading to a suspicious of arson.
