Grant funds new low-cost housing

? A $10 million federal grant will allow Topeka to build its first new public housing project in years.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant will fund the construction of a 64-unit, low-income housing project in east Topeka called Echo Ridge.

John Johnston, president and CEO of the Topeka Housing Authority, says the development will be built on 12 acres next to the housing authority’s main office.

Tax credits from the Kansas Housing Resources Corp. and $3.65 million from private investors will also help build Echo Ridge, which will have energy-efficient features.
