Dogtoberfest in South Park to benefit pets and people alike

Some pet owners have the tendency to think their animal is the cutest, the friendliest or the smartest, but this weekend they can truly put their dog to the test.

Hundreds of owners and their dogs will fill South Park on Saturday for Dogtoberfest, an event to benefit homeless people and pets in Lawrence.

Demonstrations, contests, activities, vendor booths and other events will take place throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contributions from the event will benefit the Lawrence Humane Society and the Lawrence Community Shelter.

Contests for best costume, best trick, best kisser, best tail wagger, puppy, crooner and more will start at noon.

Besides the contests, canine-lovers and their pets can participate in events such as doga (yoga classes with dogs), a dog fashion show, dog safety tips, agility tests and dance lessons starting at 10 a.m. Activities such as Ask the Vet, the best nose competition and bobbing for hot dogs will be ongoing throughout the day. The event will conclude with the parade of dogs to celebrate October as Adopt a Shelter Dog Month at 2:30 p.m.

Admission is free, but for an optional $5 registration donation, residents will receive coupons, an activity pass and the chance to win other gifts. Find more information at www.lawrencehumane.org or by calling 785-760-3946.
