From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 1, 1910: “A Kansas printer, Ernest Jordan, of Iola, is believed to have been killed in a dynamite explosion which wrecked the Los Angeles Times plant at 1:30 this morning, and killed some 16 men besides injuring a score of others. The Los Angeles police department has started vigorous investigation…. More than 9,000 persons passed through the gates into Woodland park and the Douglas county fair. Yesterday was ideal for such an event, and every corner of the county was represented…. The College ‘Sing’ last night was chosen as an excellent place to acquaint the student body with the nature of the proposed Student Union building which will be erected by a portion of the profits from all University activities. Ohio State University has just completed a similar building, and modeling after this structure the Kansas building would offer a home for all of the diverse activities on the hill. Lounging, reading, and writing rooms would be provided as a matter of course. The Women’s and Student’s Councils, the athletic boards, the annual, musical and literary organizations would have office room there. A large auditorium, several suites for the use of guests, a restaurant, cloak and checking rooms and possibly a barber shop could all find a home in the building. It would become the very center of student life on the hill.”
