Jefferson County school nominated for spot on National Register of Historic Places

The Sunnyside School in southern Jefferson County is a nominee for a listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

The old school house at 1121 Republic Road in Sarcoxie Township is among 12 Kansas sites nominated by the Kansas Historical Society’s Historic Sites Board of Review.

The school is on a rural one-acre parcel about six miles north of Lawrence. The wood-frame building features a rectangular form and front-gable roof. It was built in 1879 and patterned after a design by early Kansas architects John Haskell and Louis M. H. Wood.

The building was nominated as part of the “historic Public Schools of Kansas” multiple property listing for its association with local education and its architecture.

The nominees are sent to the office of the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, D.C. If the professional staff concurs, the properties will be included in the National Register.
