Power restored to Westar Energy customers in Douglas, Leavenworth counties after Thursday morning outage

About 2,600 Westar Energy customers lost power in Douglas and Leavenworth counties Thursday morning.

The outage happened at 9:10 a.m., but power was restored to all but one customer in Douglas County just before 11 a.m., according to the company’s website.

Westar spokesperson Gina Penzig said the outage affected customers in the following areas:

  • North Lawrence between Lincoln and Walnut streets and N. 2nd Street to E. 1600 Road
  • Between K-32 and Highway 40
  • Linwood

Penzig said crews believe the problem was caused by an animal that got into a substation at 9th and Maple streets, and that heavy damage done to the equipment caused a delay in restoring power.
