As Election Day proceeded into the noon hour, various polling places around the city were reporting turnouts as “fantastic,” “outstanding,” “fabulous,” and “one of the best we’ve ever had.” The 26 Lawrence precincts were reporting more than 5,200 ballots cast as of noon in spite of cold, drizzly weather.

Kansas University’s School of Fine Arts, who had decided earlier to cancel its traditional Christmas Vespers program [see OHT for Oct. 27, 1970], had reversed their earlier decision and had announced that Vespers would take place on Dec. 13. It would feature the customary candlelight, the symphony orchestra, and the processional and recessional by gowned choirs, but would no longer include the four “tableaux” which had previously been provided by the visual arts department.

The Haskell Indian Junior College Student Council was leading a cleanup project both on and off campus. Students were picking up trash and debris throughout the campus as well as on streets south of 23rd between the campus and the Malls shopping center.
