It’s no secret that tuition at Kansas University and elsewhere has been on the rise for some time. And state funding to KU has declined more than $4,300 per full-time student, in inflation-adjusted dollars, since 1985.

Over time, the tuition increases have been dramatic.

Thursday the Kansas Board of Regents heard tuition proposals from KU and other state universities. Citing state budget cutbacks and a desire to maintain the quality of a KU education, KU is seeking an 8.2 percent increase for resident undergraduate students.

If approved, the 2010 figures will represent a 1,188 percent increase from 1980s tuition costs. Here’s a look at what some other costs might look like if they, too, had risen that much during that time.
