25 years ago: Men charged in 1983 drug raid

A rural Lecompton man and a Topeka man were facing several drug charges stemming from a 1983 drug raid on a farmhouse. The raid had netted 400 pounds of marijuana and 800 marijuana plants. The charges in Douglas County District Court were filed just before the statute of limitations expired.

The Lawrence Breakfast Cosmopolitan Club donated $7,500 for a soccer field to be built at the planned YSI site, three miles southwest of 23rd and Iowa Streets.

Visitors to the Topeka Zoo were enthusiastic about the new “Gorilla Encounter,” the world’s only walk-through gorilla exhibit.

Local charities were benefiting from the clothing, blankets and canned food left behind by KU students at the end of the school year. Donation sites placed in residence halls allowed the groups to collect about 15 large boxes of items, which were to be given away or sold at a minimal price by local agencies.
