Weather forecast favorable for graduates

Free State, LHS should have first commencements on home fields Sunday

Weather forecasts look favorable for this weekend’s high school graduation ceremonies in Lawrence.

It would be the first time both schools graduate in their new athletic stadiums.

Matt Elwell, 6News chief meteorologist, said the Sunday forecast called for sunny skies with temperatures in the 80s.

That’s good news for graduates of Lawrence’s two public high schools, who will celebrate the end of their high school careers in front of their families and friends.

Free State High School’s ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Free State athletic stadium, 4700 Overland Drive. The Lawrence High School ceremony will be 4 p.m. at the LHS stadium, 1901 La.

For Free State, parking will be available in the main student lot north of the school. Parking is also available at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center’s lot. Lisa Boyd, a Free State assistant principal, said that about 12 handicapped parking spots are available in the Free State west lot, and the Aquatic Center has several handicapped parking spots on its west side.

People who use wheelchairs can also be dropped off at the entrance to the stadium, Boyd said.

Most parking for the LHS graduation will be in the main lot east of the stadium off 19th Street. Additional off-street parking will be in the annex lot and new parking lot, both of which can be accessed from 21st Street, LHS assistant principal Jan Leonard said.

Golf carts will be available for those who need assistance.

If inclement weather does arrive Sunday, the school district has reserved Allen Fieldhouse as an indoor venue. If they need to, school officials will make an announcement about a possible change by 10 a.m. Sunday. Watch Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and check LJWorld.com for updates Sunday.
