Most Americans don’t want Reagan’s face on $50 bill, poll finds

— Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., wants Ronald Reagan to replace Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill. Almost 8 in 10 Americans oppose the idea, a new poll shows.

Reagan, a Republican, was the “last great president of the 20th century” who “rallied the nation and won the Cold War,” McHenry said in an interview. McHenry proposed a bill on March 2 seeking to redesign the $50 bill and substitute Reagan’s image for the likeness of the Civil War hero.

McHenry’s bill is widely opposed, according to a Marist College poll. Seventy-nine percent said the suggestion is a bad idea, compared with 12 percent who supported the plan. Nine percent said they are unsure.

Eighty-three percent of Democrats oppose the idea and more than 7 in 10 Republicans do not back the switch.

The survey of 956 U.S. residents was conducted on March 25, March 26 and March 29 and had an error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, pollsters said.

McHenry insists the effort is “no slight against President Grant,” who was the country’s 18th president. The legislation, which has 17 co-sponsors, is unlikely to come up for a vote during this Congress, according to Parker Poling, a spokeswoman for McHenry.

McHenry’s legislation coincides with plans to celebrate Reagan’s 100th birthday next year.

U. S. Grant may have been a brilliant general, but his administration was one of the most corrupt in the history of the United States--nearly as corrupt as the Obama administration.

parrothead8 4 years, 10 months ago

Interesting that you mention corruption in a Presidential administration, but didn't choose to mention the G.W. Bush administration, one of the most corrupt in our lifetimes. I assume that was a mere oversight on your part.

geekyhost 4 years, 10 months ago

Did Grant have a plan that involved selling arms to a US enemy that was holding American hostages and using part of the proceeds to fund a rebellion by terrorists in South America? Just curious...

BigAl 4 years, 10 months ago

I'm proud of you Tom. You managed to write a response without bringing up Sarah Palin. Of course, we still need to work on your hate obsession with President Obama but I am hopefull that progress is being made.

By the way, I am part of the majority that would agree NOT to put Reagan on the $50 bill.

madameX 4 years, 10 months ago

A $50 bill with Reagan on it sounds like it belongs on the cover of a Dead Kennedys record not in my wallet.

Mary Sucha 4 years, 10 months ago

Reagan is the one the started this "tax cuts pay for themselves" b.s., I vote for putting his face on the $3 bill.

jayhawklawrence 4 years, 10 months ago

We should be promoting our ideals, not a political party agenda, which is what this is.

Reagan made too many mistakes and his mistakes became the downfall of the Republican party.

In spite of that, I loved the guy.

Reaganomics represents wreckanomics!

Reagan represents the Savings and Loan heist and Iran-Contra!

Why should high crimes be honored?

Place animals on the money. They've never had slaves or accepted special interest money!

denak 4 years, 10 months ago

Putting aside Reagan's politics, do we really need to spend the millions (or billions) of dollars we would need to in order to change the currency right now? We are already in debt up to our eyeballs in this country, why take on more frivolous debt??

puddleglum 4 years, 10 months ago

I agree, dena. and while they are at it, they should at least seek out someone pretty, like me, to represent money...not some wrinkled up president who happened to be president when Gorbachev ended the cold war.

denak 4 years, 10 months ago

Very true Puddleglum but I doubt we would find someone as attractive as you.

I don't know, Reagan set about to destroy the middle class who don't have too many $50 bills anymore. Since he was for the rich, why not put him on a bill only the rich have in their pockets.

Clickker 4 years, 10 months ago

Probably one of the 10 greatest Presidents of all time. His tax cuts stimulated the economy and propelled us into the wealthiest country in the history of mankind. Put his mug not only on the $50, but the $100 as well.

Randall Barnes 4 years, 10 months ago

just put john wayne on the $50 and call it good.and then billy the kid on the $100

ivalueamerica 4 years, 10 months ago

There was a recent story in Newsweek citing the agenda of the so called Reagan Conservatives.

Interesting enough, according to their ideals, Reagan would not have passed, too liberal.

I think that we should stop putting politicians on money (coins and bills) to the exclusion of all else. Why should politicians alone embody the US? Why not Edison or Einstein (who was an American citizen when he died), Ernest Hemmingway or William Faukner, Scott Joplin or Louis Armstrong.

The problem with politicians on money is, well, politics - and the fact that once they get on there it is impossible to change the currency without seeming disrespectful. The obverse of the US penny had 6 different themes between 1789 and 1909 (120 years) and only one (Lincoln) from 1909 to 2111 (102 years). We've had Washington on the quarter since 1932, Jefferson on the nickel since 1939 and Roosevelt on the dime since 1946. We used to have beautiful and artistic coins (Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Liberty standing quarters and halves), let's get out of this rut we are in now!

yourworstnightmare 4 years, 10 months ago

That would be disrespectful to Reagan. After all, the US dollar is no longer on the gold standard. Therefore, it would be ideologically impure to put Reagan on a currency that is corrupt.

Reagan Krugerrands, ideological purity, and good deficits impinge disparagingly. Yahweh bless you. Hutareeeeeee!

Ronald Reagan--

Inspired with courage the defeat of the Soviet Union and helped unravel the Eastern Bloc.

Brought us back from the economic disaster of stagflation, to a time of economic recovery.

Made us forget the foreign policy disaster in Iran.

Reversed the child death sentence (for a time) of abortion, furthered by pro-choice, Baptist Sunday School teacher Carter.

Restored faith and pride in American values.

$50 bill or not, no liberal president can touch his accomplishments.

Try as you may, you just can't rewrite history, libs.

A fool and his money are soon parted. If you need to part ways with your cash, send me a check and I'll make sure it gets redistributed fairly. Oh wait, that's the left's goal in life, to take America down by taxing the rich and spending us into oblivion.....what's that, we now have the highest annual deficit ever?.....you don't say.......

whats_going_on 4 years, 10 months ago

According to everyone, the goal of everyone else is to take down America and kill everyone in it by wealth distribution, healthcare, and big, corrupt business. (Now, how ridiculous does that sound when someone else says it?)

Why not? You just did.

How do you type and salute at the same time?

yourworstnightmare 4 years, 10 months ago

A translation of what Oklahoma said about Reagan: "Inspired with courage the defeat of the Soviet Union and helped unravel the Eastern Bloc." Increased the deficit for military spending.

"Brought us back from the economic disaster of stagflation, to a time of economic recovery." Cut taxes on the rich and increased deficit spending.

"Made us forget the foreign policy disaster in Iran." Ignored the problem, and sold them arms to fund right-wing terror squads in Central America (Iran-Contra).

"Reversed the child death sentence (for a time) of abortion, furthered by pro-choice, Baptist Sunday School teacher Carter." Wanted to do away with a woman's right to make choices about her own body.

"Restored faith and pride in American values. " Was a very convincing actor.

"$50 bill or not, no liberal president can touch his accomplishments." Except for Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.

Try as you might, you cannot escape facts, no matter how much fluffy crap you try to distort them with.

40 IQ guy is back at it. He hates America and he hates OUR president.

If you want one party rule, move to Cuba, commie!

whats_going_on 4 years, 10 months ago

yet another person who thinks that the president is out to personally get them.

Shut up, already.

yourworstnightmare 4 years, 10 months ago

"President Reagan was a true patriot who loved our country. " I cannot dispute this.

"What a change from the idiot we have today, set on the destruction of America." You cannot prove this.

This just typifies the knee-jerk right wing in America today. Disagreement on policy becomes ideological struggle and holy war.

corduroypants 4 years, 10 months ago

How did you post this from 2007? Must be a hottub time machine.

Jim Williamson 4 years, 10 months ago

I can argue that Jimmy Carter did as much to end the Cold War as Reagan by not invading Afghanistan and letting the doddering Soviet leadership hang themselves with their own rope by flailing in the desert all those years.

tomatogrower 4 years, 10 months ago

oops, and now we're there. I guess it's our turn to fall.

beatrice 4 years, 10 months ago

Of course, why do we need only one person per bill? Like the quarters with different states, why not have different people appear on bills of the same denomination? Also, why do we need just politicians on our money? Why not great scientists, artists, writers?

JayCat_67 4 years, 10 months ago

Actually, they are doing this with the latest version of the dollar coins. I still wish those would catch on and the dollar bills would faze out. The initial cost of producing the coins is much higher, but they last so much longer.

Newell_Post 4 years, 10 months ago

So, here's a trivia question for you....

Who is the only woman whose portrait has appeared on US paper money? It has to be a real woman, not an idealized one such as "the spirit of liberty" or anything like that. And it has to be paper money, not coinage.

Kirk Larson 4 years, 10 months ago

What's funny about Reagan-worshippers, when you talk to them a while you realize that Reagan did pretty much the opposite of what they think he did.

Kirk Larson 4 years, 10 months ago

Uh, Tom, it was Bush and the republicans (with some help from Clinton when he signed off on deregulation) who ruined the economy. Slowly, but surely, the President and democrats are fixing the mess...again.

Andrew Jackson is on a twenty? I thought is was Keith Richards.

Cait McKnelly 4 years, 10 months ago

I've heard Ronnie spinning in his grave since he landed there and regained his mind. However it's ironic they want to honor a man who, due to homophobia, refused to do anything about HIV and in the end created an epic disaster that killed more men, women and children than Katrina. It's also ironic that due to his support of the pro life movement just to get votes, he ended up opposing the one thing (stem cell research) that could have saved him in the end.
