100 years ago: Experts to advise fruit production

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 16, 1910: “Government experts are due here in several weeks and they will advise on and demonstrate the best procedures for high fruit production. They will emphasize the values of sprays and insect destroyers and are supposed to have a great deal of new knowledge on the subject of fruit-growing. … The state pure food inspectors came in here by surprise of late and nine warrants have been served as a result, a number of them involving well-known merchants and farmers. . . . Because of better times, more and more cities and counties are closing their poor farms due to lack of use and inhabitants.”
