Low-flying jets rattle Baldwin City

At least a few of the A-10 fighter jets that were in an air show in St. Joseph, Mo., last weekend raised some eyebrows Monday when they flew low — very low — over Baldwin City.

“It didn’t seem like the plane was much over the tree tops,” said lifelong resident Margi Walbridge.

Residents reported seeing two or three planes about 10 a.m.

Lt. Miles Blocker, who was working the operations desk at the St. Joseph airport for the 139th Airlift Group, confirmed that A-10s left there headed south Monday morning.

“It was a formation going back to Whiteman Air Force Base,” Blocker said.

Whiteman, in Missouri, is about 100 miles east of Baldwin City, as the crow — or A-10 — flies.

As for what the jets were doing flying so low, Blocker said he didn’t know the specifics, but could imagine. “That was them doing what they do,” he said. “They’re on their own.”
