Agency: Big Brothers Big Sisters

Contact: Keith Wood, 843-7359

Big Brothers Big Sisters needs volunteers on Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, to help prepare for its move at the beginning of June. Volunteers will help disassemble cubicles, remove storage bins and desk units, and help box up materials. Volunteers may also be needed during the week of May 24-29 to help spackle, patch walls, paint, etc., in the evenings. The actual move will begin June 4, with most work done on Saturday, June 5. Volunteers will be needed on those days to load the trucks at the old location, 1525 W. Sixth St., and unload at the new location. Contact Keith Wood at 843-7359 for more information or to volunteer.

Immediate needs

• Headquarters Counseling Center is coordinating a charity bike ride, “The Life Support Rally,” next month. Volunteers are needed for the registration desk, to staff rest stops, as well as help with setup and cleanup before and after the ride. The event is Saturday, June 19. Volunteers will be needed from about 6 a.m. through 1 p.m. For more information or to sign up, contact Tyler D. Staples at 856-2134 or tydstaples@yahoo.com.

• Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care is looking for a volunteer to deliver informational brochures. This will take four to five hours every two months. Call Sarah Randolph at 843-3738 to volunteer.

• The Lawrence Community Shelter needs two volunteers to join the fundraising committee for its annual November fundraising event, Chocolate and Tea at Three. The event is on Sunday, Nov. 14, and the committee meetings are starting now. The committee meets once a month on a Monday during the lunch hour, which may increase to two meetings a month as the event gets closer. Duties will be low-stress and not too time-consuming. Those interested can contact Anne Bracker at webmaster@lawrenceshelter.org.

• Douglas County Senior Services needs volunteer drivers for senior meal delivery. The shifts begin around 10:45 a.m. Monday through Friday, and last about an hour. Drivers must be able to lift 15 pounds and be available for one shift per week. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for a business to share; four employees could rotate weekly and only be obligated for one shift per month. To volunteer, call Tina Roberts at 842-0543 or send e-mail to tinar@sunflower.com.
