Art in the Park creates vibrant tableau

Thousands enjoy open-air gallery

Emma Nelson, 7, Lawrence, and her mother, Sara, admire the copper trees made by De Soto artist Kathy Horniman during the Art in the Park festival on Sunday in South Park.

Lawrence’s downtown South Park at 12th and Massachusetts streets was filled with art of all kinds Sunday afternoon, as the Lawrence Art Guild hosted the 49th annual Art in the Park.

More than 100 artists presented their creations to the public. The event is traditionally held prior to Mother’s Day, providing patrons an opportunity to purchase unique gifts for the holiday.

In addition to a wide variety of paintings, pottery and jewelry, the estimated 4,000 people who attended Art in the Park enjoyed a day of music, food and various children’s activities.

Lawrence Art Guild volunteer Steve Gwinn said he was pleased that the rain stayed away, and the cool, comfortable weather helped people enjoy the event. “We’ve had a really nice crowd this afternoon,” Gwinn said.

Local artist Laura Reaka described the event as profitable. “I’ve had a pretty constant flow of people and a lot of interest,” she said.
