Henry Chapman, 18, a member of Troop 59, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on June 15, 2009, and celebrated with a reception at First Presbyterian Church on April 11. Chapman shared his accomplishment with close friends and fellow Eagle Scouts, Jonathan Gabler, Derek Kappelman and Ryan Marienau, all members of Troop 59.

Chapman, who has been an active member of the troop, is a Fire Builder in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and a brotherhood member of Order of the Arrow. He hiked Isle Royale, attended the Northern Tier (Charles Sommers) Canoe Base, and Sea Base in Florida. He canoed the Green River and backpacked Double H in the summer of 2009.

For his Eagle service project, Chapman built shelving at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, where he also serves as a volunteer. He is a trumpet section leader with the Lawrence High School Marching Lions, a member of the National Honor Society, and has lettered in both soccer and swimming. Chapman is also an active member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Center and received the Ad Altare Dei scouting award.

Chapman, the son of Mike and Ann Chapman of Lawrence, will attend Kansas University in the fall and is a Summerfield Scholarship recipient.

Derek Kappelman, 18, a member of Boy Scout Troop 59 of Lawrence, received his Eagle award along with his friends of Cow Patrol on April 11. Kappelman, Henry Chapman, Ryan Marienau and Jonathan Gabler celebrated with family and friends at an award ceremony and reception at the First Presbyterian Church.

Kappelman began his scouting career in Cub Scout Pack 3059 in Lawrence. While a Cub Scout, he earned Tiger, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear and Webelos badges. Kappelman also earned his Arrow of Light, Cub Scout’s highest award, in February 2003.

He joined Troop 59 in Lawrence in 2003, and earned Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life badges. His awards include: World Conservation, 100 Miler Award, Triple Crown Award, Order of the Arrow — Ordeal and Brotherhood, Tribe of the Mic-O-Say — Foxman, Brave “Silent Searching Osprey,” and Warrior.

Kappelman has earned 27 merit badges while working toward his Eagle Award. Kappelman has served as patrol leader, quartermaster, librarian, and crew leader in Florida Sea Base High Adventure.

In camping and high adventures, he has attended six 10-day sessions at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, Canoe Niagua River, Isle Royale Lake Superior Backpacking, Northern Tier National Canoe, Florida Sea Base and Double H Backpacking.

For his Eagle service project, he worked on design, construction and reclaiming a third of a mile of hiking and biking trail at Clinton Lake.

Kappelman, the son of Brenda Kappelman and the late Clay Kappelman, will graduate from Lawrence High School this May and attend Johnson County Community College this fall.
