New York ? Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin agreed to become the basketball coach at St. John’s on Tuesday. The school said a news conference to introduce Lavin would be held today.

Lavin has been an analyst for ESPN since UCLA fired him in 2003. He had a 145-78 record with UCLA, leading the school to the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16 five times. The Bruins reached the final eight in 1997, his first season.

St. John’s, which fired Norm Roberts after six seasons, has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2002.

The Red Storm lost to Memphis in the first round of the NIT to finish the season at 17-16, giving Roberts an 81-101 record with the school.

St. John’s returns all five starters and 94 percent of its scoring from last season’s team.

UTEP namess Floyd coach

El Paso, Texas — Former USC basketball coach and one time Texas-El Paso assistant Tim Floyd is headed back to Texas.

The former USC coach and one-time assistant to former Miners coach Don Haskins was introduced Tuesday afternoon as the fifth coach to lead UTEP since Haskins retired in 1999.

“I came here at 22 years old, and I didn’t know anything about the game of basketball,” the 56-year-old coach said. “Coach Haskins gave me an opportunity when I didn’t deserve one.”

Pitt: No Oregon contact

Pittsburgh — Oregon has not contacted Pittsburgh for permission to talk to Jamie Dixon about its coaching opening, Panthers athletic director Steve Pederson said Tuesday.

UCLA dismisses center

Los Angeles — UCLA dismissed sophomore center J’mison Morgan from the basketball team on Tuesday. Morgan will transfer to another school closer to his Dallas home. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out a year.

UConn teammates tapped

Maya Moore of Connecticut has made the Associated Press women’s All-America basketball team for the third time.

She was joined on the squad Tuesday by teammate Tina Charles, Nebraska’s Kelsey Griffin, Virginia’s Monica Wright and Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender.

Moore and Charles have helped UConn to an NCAA-record 75 straight wins the past two seasons. It’s the fourth time the Huskies have had two first-team players.

Moore and Charles are unanimous choices of the 40-member national media panel. Voting was done before the NCAA Tournament.

Moore is the fourth three-time All-American. The others are Tennessee’s Chamique Holdsclaw, Duke’s Alana Beard and Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris.

Pitt rewards Wannstedt

Pittsburgh — Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt signed a two-year contract extension Tuesday that runs through the 2014 season, a deal designed to reassure recruits that the Panthers are running one of the nation’s most stable programs. The extension was the second signed by the former Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins coach since he was hired in December 2004. Pitt has a 19-7 record in the two seasons since Wannstedt signed his initial extension.

Tarleton State player dies

Stephenville, Texas — A redshirt freshman football player at Tarleton State has died after sustaining a head injury during spring practice.

Tarleton spokeswoman Liza Benedict says 18-year-old Zach Shaver died at a Fort Worth hospital Monday, two days after he was injured at the Division II school in Stephenville.

ECU boots running back

Greenville, N.C. — East Carolina has dismissed running back Brandon Jackson and suspended running back Giavanni Ruffin following their arrests. Coach Ruffin McNeill said Jackson was kicked off the team after having previous rules violations. McNeill called Ruffin’s suspension indefinite and that he would have to meet several requirements to return to the program.

Holmes denies accusation

Orlando, Fla. — Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes denies hurting a woman who says he threw a glass at her in an Orlando nightclub and claims another woman hit her with the cup, according to a police report released Tuesday.

Holmes told an Orlando Police Department officer that the alleged victim, Anshonae Mills, grabbed his wrist, got in his face and called him a racial name after he asked for his seat back in the VIP section of Club Rain earlier this month.

Mills, 21, told a different story in a civil lawsuit she filed last week against 26-year-old Holmes. In the lawsuit, she claimed that the Super Bowl MVP got in her face, and then hit her with the glass after she refused to give up her seat.

Eller’s appeal rejected

St. Paul, Minn. — Former Minnesota Vikings standout Carl Eller has lost an appeal of his conviction stemming from a 2008 arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.

Roddick reaches quarters

Key Biscayne, Fla. — Andy Roddick advanced to the quarterfinals Tuesday at the Sony Ericsson Open by beating Benjamin Becker, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Roddick was serving at 1-4, love-40 in the first set when he rallied on the strength of his dominating serve.

McCourt trial set for August

Los Angeles — A trial that could determine whether ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers is shared because of a divorce has been set for August.

Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon on Tuesday said the trial will begin on Aug. 30 and be spread over 11 days. Additional time may be needed to decide if Frank McCourt should have sole possession of the team, or if his estranged wife Jamie should be deemed a co-owner as part of the couple’s ongoing divorce case.

Jupiter, Fla. — The Florida Marlins acquired left-hander Nate Robertson from the Detroit Tigers for left-hander Jay Voss on Tuesday.
