25 years ago: State officials want warning signs at bars

U.S. Education Secretary William J. Bennett said parents should be given more choices over what schools their children attended and be allowed tax breaks to help them afford private schools if they so chose. His comments came as a shock to many in the field of public education.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that police could not shoot an unarmed suspect fleeing from crime scenes when there was no apparent threat of harm to police officers or bystanders.

Problem roadways in the Palmyra Township continued to create static for officials and citizens. There were charges that board members might have misappropriated some funds.

Some state officials said laws should require the posting of signs in bars and taverns and other public places warning about the dangers of drinking alcohol while pregnant.

The unemployment rate in Douglas County fell slightly in February, to 4.4 percent in contrast to 4.7 percent in January. It was a result of an increase in farm and manufacturing jobs locally, officials said.
