100 years ago: Lawrence avoids use of number 13

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 28, 1910: “Last night a number of football coaches and players met at the home of Coach Kennedy to discuss the new rules and get a line on probable formations under their requirements. The rules were made by the Interscholastic Football Rules Committee last month. There are 14 changes and it was left to a special committee to codify them and to provide adequate penalties….. Number 13 is sedulously avoided by Lawrence people. There is no number 13 on Massachusetts. One hotel here had a room numbered 13, but they changed the number because anyone assigned to the room would demand to be moved. It was one of the best in the house, too. There is no automobile license numbered 13. There was one time, but the ill-fated machine was constantly being wrecked, and has long since gone to the junk pile. There is no street car numbered 13. The motormen declare they are too easily wrecked. It may be pure superstition, but no one has the audacity to buck the fates.”
