Kansas Turnpike set to open new ramps at West Lawrence interchange

An ongoing overhaul of the Kansas Turnpike through Lawrence will again take on a new look for traffic, beginning Friday morning.

Sometime between 8:30 a.m. and noon, two new ramps will enter service for eastbound traffic exiting and entering the turnpike at Exit 202, at McDonald Drive.

Drivers coming from the Lecompton area, and looking to exit at Exit 202, will be turning off the turnpike about 3/4-mile earlier than normal, said Rex Fleming, the turnpike’s project engineer.

Drivers coming onto the turnpike, to head toward the Kansas City area, will use a new, longer ramp that extends beyond the Michigan Street bridge, Fleming said.

The new ramps are entering use so that crews can replace existing pavement where the old ramps have been in service, he said.

All of the work is part of an ongoing $130 million overhaul that includes construction of new Kansas River bridges.
