The Oread provides revised plan to city for KU football tailgating events

Revised plans for a series of tailgating events around The Oread hotel are coming back to Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday.

Owners of The Oread, 12th and Indiana streets, want to host tailgating events three hours prior to and one hour after each Kansas University home football game.

New details of the proposal include:

• 12th Street will remain open, although in front of the hotel the driving lanes will be narrowed to allow a portion of the party to extend onto the street. A temporary fence will be installed to separate pedestrians and traffic.

• Oread Avenue will be open, but the event will take up the west side parallel parking spaces along Oread between 12th Street and the entrance to the KU parking garage. Kid zone activities will be located in that area. Temporary fencing will be installed between the games and the street.

• The Oread’s liquor license temporarily will be expanded to the public right-of-way adjacent to the hotel along 12th and Indiana streets. Alcohol won’t be allowed along the Oread Avenue right-of-way.

Oread leaders also are seeking a permit for a one-time Fall Sports Kick-Off Event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 27. That event will close 12th Street in front of the hotel and will close Oread Avenue from 12th Street to 13th Street. Alcohol won’t be served in the right-of-way for that event.

Commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
