From the Lawrence Daily World for July 13, 1910: “Dr. Maurice Parmelee, professor of sociology at the university, thinks that the Lutheran pastor in Kansas City, who declared from the pulpit that ‘Our Godless universities were injuring the church,’ is entirely outside the point. A university is a secular institution and Dr. Parmelee does not believe it is its province to be either Godly or Godless. The primary object of a great educational institution is, or should be, to seek the truth and then disseminate it precisely as found to the student body…. At a session of the Lawrence Committee a proposition will be submitted for the location of a $10,000 creamery and milk products plant in Lawrence. The promoters expect to manufacture a high grade of butter and condensed milk. Cheese may also be a by-product of the concern, but no cream or milk will be sold…. The first wheat from Douglas County has been marketed. It was sold to the Bowersock Mill and brought the grower 90 cents a bushel. The wheat is exceptionally good this year.”
