25 years ago: Man reports firecrackers thrown into car

Douglas County commissioners gave their tentative approval to starting a preliminary design study for the bypass proposed south and west of Lawrence. The study, which was estimated to cost $150,000, was to be funded from a combination of city and county sources. The first six to eight weeks would be spent selecting a consultant, negotiating a contract and determining the scope of the study.

Local police said they had received “an unbelievable number” of fireworks complaints, mostly from people shooting off fireworks after the legal hours. Two men were given citations for shooting off bottle rockets, and another local man told police that someone threw a package of Black Cat firecrackers into the passenger window of his car while he was driving.
