Katelyn Truscello, Lawrence, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in music with distinction during the University of Iowa’s spring 2010 commencement on May 14.

Casey Maxon, Lawrence, was named to the honor roll for the spring 2010 semester at McPherson College, by earning a grade-point average of 3.55 or higher.

Daniel Pugnetti, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Maryville University in St. Louis, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.33.

Rockhurst University announces area students awarded degrees during its centennial year commencement ceremony on May 15, and those named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester, by achieving a grade-point average of 3.5 or above.

Students earning bachelor’s degrees are: Guy Montgomery, economics, magna cum laude, Eudora; and Janie Heim, nursing, accelerated, Lawrence.

Lawrence students earning master’s degrees are: Scott Kemme, business administration, executive fellows; Donald Longbottom, education; and Shelby Shurtz, occupational therapy. Adam Provost, Tonganoxie, earned a master’s degree in business administration.

Students named to the dean’s list are: Josh Linton, Basehor; Nick Johnson, De Soto; Brian Talbert, Eudora; Kaela Severa, Joseph Varberg and Alex Zimmerschied, Lawrence; and Victoria Marrs, Tonganoxie.

Lisa Lyon, Winchester, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa., by earning a grade-point average 3.6 or higher.

Lyon, a senior, is majoring in communication disorders and is a graduate of Jefferson County North High School.

Titus Smith, Baldwin City, and Marianne Sansom, Eudora, were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., by earning a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.99.

Smith, also earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Freed-Hardeman this spring.

Johanna Mehl of Lawrence, a textile design major, was named to the dean’s list for spring 2010 semester at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Kristel and Mike Lewis, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Kate Elizabeth Lewis, on June 22, 2010, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Kate has two brothers, Macade, 5, and Luke, 4.

Her maternal grandparents are Jere and Judy Wiechman, Barnes, and her paternal grandparents are Randy and Sue Lewis, Lawrence. Her great-grandmother is Kathryn Hagen, Overland Park.

Ashley and Brian Rogers, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Kristopher John Rogers, on June 26, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Kristopher’s maternal grandparents are Mary and Richard Aguilar, and his paternal grandparents are Terri and Steve Rogers, all of Eudora. His great-grandparents are Clyde and June Casteel, Augusta.

Scott Penny graduated cum laude with a biology degree from the University of Oregon, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in ceremonies held June 14. He was also named First Team Academic All-American in track and field. Penny is a 2006 graduate of Lawrence High School, and is enrolled at the Kansas University School of Medicine. He is the son of William and Marlene Penny, Lawrence.

The University of Saint Mary announces area students named to the dean’s list for spring 2010 semester, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Baker University announces area students awarded degrees from Baker’s College of Arts and Sciences in May.

Earning bachelor of arts degrees are: Matthew James and Caroline Pugh, Baldwin City; Denise Fiene and Darcey Nance, Lawrence; and Samantha Waldman, Overbrook.

Earning bachelor of science degrees are: Eris Blaser, Jessica Hill and Amber Smith, Baldwin City; Kelsey Epperson, Eudora; Jamie Resseguie and Callee Souders, Lawrence; Samantha Waldman, Overbrook; and Jenee Wilbanks, Tonganoxie.

R. Spencer Bonner, Lawrence, graduated with a master’s degree in sports management from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. The commencement ceremony was held May 15.

Jenica Wessels, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, by earning a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

Leah Williams, Lawrence, has been named to the honor list for the spring 2010 semester at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., by earning a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. Williams, a sophomore, is an architectural engineering major.

Justine Ahle, Lawrence, received the Top Sophomore Student Award at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The award is given to students demonstrating leadership abilities and involvement in the campus community. Ahle serves as the programming chair for Goodwin-Kirk Residence Hall, the service vice president for Alpha Phi Omega and a member of the Drake Treblemakers women’s a cappella group.

Grace Smarsh, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Smarsh was awarded the recognition of highest honors, by earning a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

Grace Lang, a 2010 graduate of Free State High School, was awarded the Community Award at Doane College in Crete, Neb., in recognition of superior academic performance. The award, valued at $5,000 per year, is given to incoming students with ACT scores of 21 or higher and core high-school grade-point averages of at least 3.0.

Southwestern College, Winfield, held commencement exercises May 10. Area graduates include: Brandon Fisher, Linwood, Master of Business Administration; and Elizabeth Higbee, Tonganoxie, bachelor’s degree in theatre with an emphasis in theatre performance.

Madison Orth, daughter of Greg and Becky Orth of Lawrence, was inducted into the University of Oklahoma Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta during its spring initiation March 27. Students are invited to become members after their first semester of studies based on academic achievement, a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Jessyka Coulter, daughter of Synthia Dove of Linwood, was named a Roadman Scholar at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, in recognition of high academic distinction for the 2009-10 academic year. Coulter, a sophomore who is majoring in biology and business administration, is a graduate of Basehor-Linwood High School. Roadman Scholars must be full-time students who have completed at least 45 credits of college work with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.76 or higher.

Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, announces Lawrence students named to its president’s and dean’s lists for the spring 2010 semester. To be named to the president’s list, students must earn a grade-point average of 4.0; those with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher were named to the dean’s list. Aliza Rosenthal and Peter Zemansky were named to the president’s list. Justine Ahle and Jordan Ray were named to the dean’s list.

Thomas Henry, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, by earning a grade-point of at least a 3.4. Henry, a sophomore, is majoring in English and textual studies.

Four 2010 graduates of Free State High School have accepted $500 Academic Opportunity Awards from Fort Hays State University for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Recipients and their majors are: Margaret Bireta, daughter of Rich and Jane Bireta of Lawrence, music education; Natalie Sabillon, daughter of Alejandro and Waldina Sabillon of Lawrence, art; Monica Shaheed, daughter of Peter and Gail Shaheed of Lawrence, graphic design; and Amy Trompeter, daughter of Mark and Michele Trompeter of Lawrence, fine arts.
