Replace your cabinet hinges with five simple steps

Replacing old and worn cabinet hinges is simple, when you find hinges that are the same size and shape. If the new hinges do not match up to the old ones, the job becomes a little more complicated.

Step 1: Detach the cabinet door from its frame by removing the hinge screws on the cabinet side.

Step 2: Remove the hinge from the cabinet door and take it to the local hardware store or lumberyard to find an appropriate replacement.

Step 3: If the new hinge is an exact duplicate, simply screw it back into place on the cabinet door. If it is slightly different, fill the old screw holes on both the cabinet and the door with wood epoxy. Once the wood epoxy is dry, position the new hinges two inches from both the top and bottom edges of the cabinet door. Mark the new screw positions on the cabinet door and pre-drill them if possible. Attach the new hinges to the cabinet door keeping the hinge level as the screws are tightened.

Step 4: Re-attach the door to the cabinet frame, marking and setting new holes if necessary. Loosen and tighten the hinge screws as needed to hang the door squarely within the cabinet opening.

Step 5: Use a level to make sure the door is hung properly and check to see that it swings open and shut freely.

Sweep up your mess, stow away your tools and put a notch on your trusty level for another job well done.
