Berry Plastics able to use federal bonds

Douglas County commissioners Wednesday gave unanimous approval to giving Berry Plastics access to $11.7 million worth of federal recovery zone bonds to finance building of a warehouse and distribution facility in Lawrence.

Berry officials want to build a 600,000-square-foot warehouse that would cost about $21 million, and they say the project would bring 11 new jobs and provide about 350 construction jobs.

The county received authority last year as part of the federal economic stimulus package to allocate $11.7 million worth of the low-interest bonds for projects that would create jobs. The county would not back the low-interest bonds, and Berry must pay them off.

Berry officials are also seeking similar bonds available from the state. Now that the commission has supported issuing the county-issued bonds, Berry will reduce its request for the state-issued bonds to $9.2 million.
