The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department still encourages people to get the H1N1 flu vaccine.

Flu season typically lasts through May, and past pandemics have occurred in waves.

“With holiday travel and children and young adults returning to school in January, it’s possible that there will be another increase in H1N1 illness. Getting vaccinated is your best protection against the virus,” Director Dan Partridge said.

The health department has scheduled the following clinics:

• Saturday, Jan. 9 — 9 a.m. to noon, Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St., Lawrence.

• Tuesday, Jan. 12 — 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Community Health Facility.

As part of the federal vaccination program, the H1N1 immunization will be available at no charge. No appointment is necessary.

The Health Department encourages children under 10, who have received their first dose of the H1N1 vaccine, to receive their second booster immunization at the upcoming clinics. A period of one month must have passed between the child’s first and second doses.
