From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 26, 1910: A race war seems imminent in Memphis today after the shooting of a deputy sheriff by Aaron Norfleet, a negro. Feelings are running high and many of both races are carrying guns which they say they will use if necessary. The situation looks bad. . . . There are due to be many tests of the new state law that allows sale of liquor for medicinal, mechanical and scientific purposes. Druggists are due to be the sellers. . . . Prof. Hunter of the university has returned from Rosedale where he gave a demonstration of the spraying of fruit trees to eliminate the deadly San Jose scale. More than 300 attended the event. . . . A state factory inspector left here today after complimenting local factory people on their safe and solid operations. He said he found everyone willing to make suggested changes and improvements and gave the local scene good marks. . . . Earl Gregory, 20, a university student was killed last night when he fell from a bridge at Bonner Springs. He was a noted athlete. His body was not found until today by a passing railroad man.
