From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 29, 1985:

• A new report showed that 172 Douglas County women under the age of 19 had become pregnant during the previous year (1984), and two of them were between the ages of 10 and 14. More than half of the total number of women had chosen to have abortions. Locally, the number of teen pregnancies had not varied much in the previous few years. The highest rates had come between 1979 and 1981. In 1981 there had been 230 teen pregnancies in Douglas County, with 55 percent of them ending in abortions.
• More than six armed robberies had been reported in Lawrence in the past six weeks, but workers in all-night businesses were still feeling fairly safe. Some precautions taken by owners of 24-hour businesses were having multiple employees on duty and advertising the fact that the businesses kept little cash on hand.
• Little information was available on arrests made in Lawrence by federal Secret Service agents. Two Missouri women had been arrested on the charges of passing counterfeit $100 bills in downtown Lawrence.
