25 years ago: Local ads suggest new Apple or Commodore computers for gifts

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1985:

  • According to Douglas County extension agent Jack Lindquist, the county had 43 farmers who grew and sold Christmas trees. One local family grew Scotch and Austrian pines and was charging $20 a tree. Another farmer said he was charging $3 to $4 a foot for his trees and had already sold nearly all of the 300 available trees. Another family was selling cedar trees for $1 per tree, regardless of size, which helped them clear out some growth in their pastures and provided inexpensive fun for families who wanted to cut their own tree.
  • An advertisement suggested the new portable Apple IIc, “The Hottest Selling Apple Ever,” as a gift. At $1,300, the IIc was a bargain compared to the Lisa computer ($9,995) and even the original Macintosh ($2,495) which were also being sold by Apple at that time. Another new model being sold in Lawrence by competitor Commodore was the Amiga computer, which cost $1,295, or $1,790 with a monitor.
