Two killed — including teenage girl — in two-vehicle accident Wednesday evening in Gardner

? The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday morning that a 63-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl, both from Gardner, died as a result of a crash Wednesday evening on U.S. Highway 56 near Gardner.

Master Deputy Tom Erickson said two vehicles were involved in a head-on crash at 5:10 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 56 and New Century Parkway in Gardner.

He said a pickup truck that was traveling west and a car traveling east collided, but the accident is still under investigation.

The car was driven by 41-year-old Lisa Apperson. Her three passengers were, Cooper Anderson, 7, Hailey Apperson, 10, and Hannah Apperson, 13.

Milton Whaley, 63, was driving the truck. All people involved were from the Gardner area, Erickson said.

Hannah Apperson died at the scene, and Whaley died later at Overland Park Regional Hospital.

The two other children remain hospitalized at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and Lisa Apperson is also hospitalized in Overland Park, Erickson said.

Lisa Apperson was listed in stable condition Thursday evening. Condition updates for Cooper and Hailey were unavailable.
