Popular Kansas musician Elbert “Big Woody” Davis dies in police chase in Topeka

? A popular Kansas musician has been identified as the man killed while fleeing from deputies.

Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn said Tuesday that the man killed in Monday’s chase was Elbert W. Davis Jr. The 61-year-old drummer went by the name “Big Woody.”

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that the chase began in Osage County after a woman drove herself to the sheriff’s office suffering from a gunshot wound and multiple stab wounds. She told officers that Davis had attacked her in her home.

A deputy had stopped Davis in his minivan and released him after the attack. Upon learning what had happened, the officer tried to stop the vehicle again. The ensuing chase ended when Davis’ minivan hit a concrete pillar in southern Shawnee County and caught on fire.
