College Station, Texas — Texas A&M has accepted an invitation to play in the Cotton Bowl.

The 19th-ranked Aggies will learn on Sunday which team from the Southeastern Conference they will play. It will be Texas A&M’s first appearance in the game since 2005 and their 12th overall.

Texas A&M (9-3) enters the game with a six-game winning streak and a victory in the game would give the Aggies their first 10-win season since 1998.

The 75th edition of the game is set for Jan. 7 with a 7:27 p.m. Central Time kickoff.

Gundy wins Big 12 coach of year

Oklahoma City — Mike Gundy was chosen as the Big 12 coach of the year Tuesday after directing No. 16 Oklahoma State to a share of its first South Division title.

Gundy received 12 of 20 first-place votes from The Associated Press’ panel.

The Cowboys (10-2, 6-2 Big 12) were picked to finish at the bottom of the division but instead set a new school record with 10 regular-season victories.

Gundy was also named the Big 12 coach of the year in voting by the league’s coaches.

UM’s Friedgen ACC coach of year

Greensboro, N.C. — Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s coach of the year for the second time.

The Terrapins finished 8-4 and contended for the ACC title a year after going 2-10.

That’s one of the best reversals in ACC history.

Venables not interested in Miami

Norman, Okla. — Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables doesn’t plan on pursuing the head coaching vacancy at Miami.

Venables said after the Sooners’ practice on Tuesday night that he’s “not interested in any job” and is focused on No. 10 Oklahoma’s preparations to face No. 13 Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game on Saturday night.

Hattiesburg, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi on Tuesday accepted an invitation to play in the third annual Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Dec. 21 against a Big East opponent.

Army to play in Armed Forces Bowl

Dallas — Army is headed to its first bowl game in 14 years.

The Black Knights on Tuesday accepted an invitation to the Armed Forces Bowl in Dallas. Army (6-5) will play a C-USA team Dec. 30 at SMU’s Ford Stadium.

‘Bama fires staffer over songs

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — The University of Alabama has fired an employee who played songs aimed at Auburn quarterback Cam Newton before the Iron Bowl.

The University said the part-time staffer was fired for the unauthorized songs. “Take the Money and Run” and “Son of a Preacher Man” were played while Newton warmed up.

North Texas hires McCarney

Denton, Texas — Dan McCarney on Tuesday was hired as the new coach at North Texas, giving the Mean Green a leader with plenty of college experience to rebuild a struggling program. North Texas is coming off six straight losing seasons.

McCarney has been in college coaching for 34 years, the last three as defensive line coach at Florida. He was head coach at Iowa State from 1995-2006.

Giants agree to terms with Tejada

San Francisco — The World Series champion San Francisco Giants have found their new shortstop, agreeing to terms with free agent Miguel Tejada on a $6.5 million, one-year contract Tuesday.

Uribe leaves S.F. for L.A.

Los Angeles — Juan Uribe finalized a three-year, $21 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, leaving the World Series champion San Francisco Giants to become their archrivals’ second baseman.

n Dealing from surplus after signing Uribe, the Dodgers sent infielder Ryan Theriot to St. Louis for reliever Blake Hawksworth.

Jeter, agent meet

New York — A baseball official says Derek Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, have met Tuesday as the New York Yankees await a counteroffer from their captain.

New York has offered Jeter a $45 million, three-year contract, and the All-Star shortstop has not made a formal proposal.
