40 years ago: Assistant manager attempts to chase down grocery-store robber

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 1, 1970:

  • At Falley’s Market, located at 27th and Iowa, a person carrying groceries ran from the store and was chased by an assistant manager around the back of the building and across a field. The suspect pulled a gun, threatening the assistant manager, and then ran into an apartment in a nearby complex. No arrests had yet been made in the case.
  • No one was injured in a mattress fire at Oliver Residence Hall at Kansas University. Officials said arson was suspected in the blaze, which caused an estimated $100 in damages. It was the second fire reported that day in that particular room, and the incidents marked the third and fourth reports of vandalism in the room since early November. The residents of the room were at dinner at the time of the second fire.
  • Temperatures in Kansas were well above normal for the beginning of December. Lawrence had hit 67 degrees on the previous day, tying a record set in 1926, and was expected to reach 70 today, which would have set a new record for this date. Meanwhile, the temperature in southwest Kansas was expected to hit “an incredible 80 degrees.”
