40 years ago: Dark plumes of smoke from CFCA plant mostly steam

Chrysler Corporation unveiled its 1971 cars, with the only new entry being the “Scamp,” a two-door hardtop with a standard paint stripe running the length of the body. Chrysler also announced that it would be introducing two mini-cars, the Dodge Colt and the Plymouth Cricket, in January, in hopes of competing with the increasingly successful import “bugs.”

Lawrence residents were inquiring about the dark-colored plumes of smoke coming from the towers of the CFCA plant east of town. The CFCA manager responded that the “smoke” was mostly steam, with trace amounts of ammonium nitrate dust, and that during periods of cooler weather the steam would condense, making the particles more noticeable.

A few Haskell Indian Junior College students had arrived on campus, but the majority of the expected total of nearly 1,250 students were due to arrive over the weekend for the start of classes on Tuesday. Haskell Superintendent Wallace Galluzzi said that some remodeling in dormitory buildings might cause some students to have temporary off-campus housing if the work was not completed by the start of classes.
