Kansas City, Kan. ? Bayer CropScience has agreed to pay fines and allocate money to improve its response to chemical accidents at its pesticide-manufacturing plant in Kansas City, Mo.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that Bayer CropScience will pay nearly $40,000 in fines and spend another $100,000 to correct, prevent and respond to chemical accidents and releases.

Under an agreement filed Wednesday in Kansas City, Kan., the firm will pay $37,790 for not having an adequate risk management program at the plant. Bayer will also spend $100,000 to install air monitors around the plant to help detect any chemical releases from the plant.

The company also will hire a consultant to review all accidents and chemical releases at the plant in the last five years.
