From the Lawrence Daily World for August 26, 1910: “The oyster season was officially opened by wholesale houses this week. Yesterday the downtown restaurants served the succulent bivalve. The opening is about the usual time and the oysters received in Lawrence are said to be of excellent quality. The cool weather has made shipping easy…. In a semi-comatose condition from a fall from a banister, Melvern McCall, the 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McCall, 1040 Pa., lies at his home today with a possible fracture of the skull. The lad appeared paralyzed after his fall. He is not unconscious, but slumbers in a sort of half doze today. Melvern is a brother of Castle McCall, a World carrier, and had accompanied the latter to the office last evening. Together with others he was sliding down the banister railing in the press room, when he lost his balance and tumbled to the concrete floor…. C. D. Bell of Ottawa was adjudged insane yesterday. Bell is a religious maniac, the problems of religion hanging with such weight in his mind that when he cannot solve them, he is filled with an overwhelming desire to end his life, says the Ottawa Republic.”
