The Lawrence area has hit triple digits for its temperatures three days in a row and with no end in sight, the National Weather Service has extended the excessive heat warning to Friday evening.

By 7 p.m. Tuesday, the temperature was still at 97 degrees, down from an earlier high of 101. The heat index remained in the triple digits, at 107.

High temperatures for the rest of the week will hover around 100 degrees. The temperature combined with humidity could bring heat index readings to 105-110 degrees.

Some relief may come late Friday evening or early Saturday when a cold front passes through the area. According to 6News Chief Meteorologist Matt Elwell, the cold front should bring showers and cooler air. Daytime highs Saturday and Sunday will be around 90 degrees.

Prolonged exposure to these high temperatures could cause heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke. If you have to be outside, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids and wear light-colored, lightweight clothing.

Remember to check on friends, relatives and neighbors who may be at risk, including children and the elderly. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles, as temperatures inside can become lethal in only a few minutes.
