E-filing of tax returns gains popularity

Kansas taxpayers are getting the clue.

As of April 2, a total of 753,000 Kansans had filed their federal tax returns electronically, enough to account for 86.6 percent of returns turned in by that time.

During the same period last year, only 714,300 federal returns — or 79.4 percent of the total — had been e-filed in Kansas.

“If you’ve never tried it, this is the year,” said Michael Devine, IRS spokesman for Kansas. “It’s the most accurate way to file your tax return.”

Fewer than 1 percent of e-filed returns are found to have errors, compared with up to 20 percent of those filed on paper, Devine said.

Filing electronically also speeds processing. A taxpayer filing electronically and using direct deposit can expect a tax refund within 10 days, Devine said, while filing a paper return and opting for a paper check could take six to eight weeks.
