Driver who fled accident scene on U.S. Highway 59 sought by police

Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 59 Highway just north of the Douglas County line Tuesday around 2 p.m. A passenger in a pickup truck that hit a semi-tractor trailer was taken by helicopter ambulance to an area hospital. No other information was available.

Law enforcement officers are seeking the driver of a white Ford pickup truck who ran into the back of a semitrailer Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 59, about a mile north of the Douglas-Franklin County line.

After the accident — in which the passenger in the smaller truck was injured — the driver fled on foot.

“Witnesses said that they saw him running away, chasing after a dog,” said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Josh Kellerman. “He must’ve kept going after the dog because he never returned to the scene.”

The passenger was flown to Kansas University Hospital from the accident scene by Life Star helicopter, Kellerman said. The trooper said the passenger was conscious, but he suffered facial injuries in the wreck.
