From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 21, 1909: If the local street car company can only keep up the pace it started today in these early stages, it will have a gold mine in Lawrence. With a five-minute service on Massachusetts Street, every car has had a goodly number of passengers, the cars near the noon hour being completely filled. Many are pleased. Meanwhile, they are pushing the work on the Tennessee Street line and hope to reach the university with a line soon. . . . Tonight the Douglas County Fairgrounds will be ablaze with light and the program full of attractive shows will furnish amusement to the hundreds who will take part in the opening night at the fair. Today saw great effort to get everything in readiness. . . . The first football accident of the year on McCook Field came when Dutch Martin, captain of the high school football squad, broke a shoulder while scrimmaging against the university varsity. Coach Bert Kennedy of the university had arranged the meeting of his varsity and some of the bigger high school boys. . . . Bender’s Busters at Haskell will play the Independence Business College football team as part of the county fair this Friday afternoon.
