Area residents will have a chance to provide input on how the city should proceed with a project to improve the Burlington Northern Santa Fe depot in east Lawrence.

The city will host a meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 27 to discuss how the 1950s-era building may be rehabilitated. The meeting will be at the depot, 413 E. Seventh St.

The city is in the process of negotiating a low-cost purchase of the building from the railroad, but following the purchase several repairs to the structure will need to be made.

The Lawrence-based architectural firm of Hernly Associates has been hired to study the building. Representatives from Hernly Associates will be at the meeting to receive comments.

It's one thing to rehab the station, but it would be useful to rehab the route from the station to downtown, too, to make it better lit and safer. It would also help if there were some kind of retail nearby so that passengers could grab some food and drink while the train is stopped. There should at least be some vending machines.

Some things are beautiful. This building may be somewhat historical (debatable) and I even have my own memories of Santa Fe RR from around this time but...Its damned ugly!!
