100 years ago: Bible study day planned

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 8, 1909: The Ministerial Alliance decided today to cooperate with the religious work committee of the YMCA and hold a Bible study day in Lawrence. The date is yet to be set. It will be a big mass meeting in a town hall. . . . Pi Upsilon, a new local fraternity, has been organized during the summer by a group of young men at the university. It will emphasize scholarship. . . . The hardest rain in the annals of Lawrence deluged the town last night, filling cellars, booming the creeks and flooding the countryside generally. The final total of rainfall in most parts of town will be at least eight inches. University records show there never has been a rain that heavy and there has been great damage from washouts. Water is standing everywhere and the news is not good for farmers with any kinds of crops in the fields. Douglas County and Lawrence seemed by far the hardest hit in the general region. . . . Thirty-eight of the 87 schools of Douglas County have opened for the winter term. Most face nine-month terms and the average salary increase for teachers is due to be about $50.
