From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 7, 1909: “‘I smell a vile cigarette; who’s got it, who’s got it?’ shrieked Carrie Nation to a crowd of spectators at the Santa Fe depot last night. The notorious joint-smasher then made a dive through the crowd to find the offending party but the young man escaped out of the door while the crowd yelled with delight. The hatchet-wielder then preached her temperance gospel until she was blue in the face and the crowd nearly convulsed in laughter.”
