State labor secretary to deliver update on Kansas employment

? On the eve of the Labor Day weekend, Kansas Labor Secretary Jim Garner will deliver his yearly update on the state’s employment picture.

Garner was scheduled to give the annual speech at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Statehouse.

He’s expected to address the state’s rising jobless rate, and the resulting pressure on the unemployment benefits trust fund.

Kansas unemployment stood at 7.7 percent in July, the third straight month it topped 7 percent. According to Garner, the state has tapped federal funds to keep the unemployment benefits fund solvent, including borrowing from the U.S. Treasury.
