Award established for med students

A new award honoring a Kansas University School of Medicine-Wichita professor will benefit one student graduating with a master’s of public health degree each year.

Ronald and Patricia Frederickson of Osage City established the award in honor of their son, Doren D. Frederickson, who taught preventive medicine and public health in Wichita from 1992 until his death in 2008.

At the age of 12, Frederickson was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and his father attributed his death at the age of 53 to complications related to the disease.

His parents used memorial gifts sent after his death for the award, adding $17,500 to fully endow the fund.
