A mile-long stretch of 27th Street is scheduled to start getting a fresh coat of pavement Tuesday, with completion expected by the end of the week — “weather-permitting,” said Steve Lashley project manager for the city’s Department of Public Works.

The project to upgrade 27th, from Redbud Lane to Louisiana Street, has been going for more than three months now. Crews started cutting into curbs July 23 and finished replacing them Friday.

Crews from R.D. Johnson Excavating Co. Inc. stripped off the road’s top layer of pavement about two weeks ago, Lashley said, and recently have been patching the road’s base and installing drainage pipes and storm drains that weren’t part of the original work order.

R.D. Johnson has 20 working days to finish the job, but Lashley expects the end to arrive much sooner.

“Everybody wants it to be done,” he said. “The contractor wants it to be done. We want it to be done, and the homeowners who have to drive on it everyday want it to be done.”
